Over 300 Volunteers Participated in Chinatown BID's Inaugural Earth Day "Spring Up to Clean Up" Chinatown Event

On April 22nd, several hundred volunteers consisting of students, local residents and the CleanStreet worker team participated in Chinatown BID's first annual Earth Day Chinatown street cleaning event. The huge group was divided into 8 teams which spread out all over Chinatown to pickup litter and trash from the sidewalks/streets. Students also made Chinatown more green by planting flowers in Chatham Square and Columbus park. In addition, students also held a special event for Pvt. Danny Chen by folding cranes and signing a giant birthday card in memory of Danny who would have turned 20 on May 26 this Memorial Day.

Council Member Margaret Chin And the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus Present: Employment and Small Business Opportunity Expo

The New York City Council Black Latino and Asian Caucus and the New Balance Track and Field Center will host a one day career and small business expo designed to connect New York City residents to a broad range of job training, hiring and small business development resources. This event-- the first of its kind-- will provide job seekers and, aspiring and fledgling business owners the opportunity to interface with employers, training providers, small business development experts and lenders, and ultimately walk away with advice, loan applications, training and connections to a multitude of opportunities!

The New York City Small Business and Career Development Expo will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 11am to 2pm at the Fort Washington Avenue Armory in Washington Heights. The renovated Armory and New Balance Track and Field Center is home to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and boasts over 30,000 square feet of venue space. Three thousand New York City residents of 27 City Council districts will be invited to attend this special event, which will offer four program tracks, or zones.

The Chinatown District Management Association (CDMA), Inc. aka Chinatown BID is a nonprofit organization created on February 1, 2012 to provide supplemental cleaning and maintenance services, holiday decorations and service improvements that will enhance the public enjoyment of Chinatown.

The Chinatown DMA is the 67th BID created in New York City. The City's BIDs supplement city sanitation and public safety services, promote businesses through marketing initiatives and advocacy, enhance the city's physical environment through streetscape improvements projects, and engage local community with student internship programs. In addition, BIDs working together with the city government helps improves quality of life for New Yorkers, visitors; raises standards and helps strengthen the local economy.

Hester Street Fair
Open every Saturday, 10am-6pm

Hester Street Fair, located in a beautiful park setting, was once home to New York City's largest and oldest pushcart markets. Their mission is to sell quality goods and food, but to also create a space that reflects the dynamic energy of the Lower East Side.

Located at the corner of Hester and Essex Street, the fair celebrates the culture and rich history of the Lower East Side neighborhood. At the turn of the century, Hester Street was the site of the busiest outdoor market in New York City: "There is hardly a square foot of ground in Hester Street that is not covered with people during the day. The whole place seems to be in a state of perpetual motion, and the occasional visitor is apt to have a feeling of giddiness." - NY Times, July 27, 1895.

Today, the Hester Street Fair focuses on curated local goods, food and most importantly, highlights the vibrant spirit of the community. Located at Hester and Essex Streets, the tree-lined site is ideally situated between both F stops (East Broadway/Delancey) and adjacent to Seward park.

Employers Needed For S.T.E.P. Summer Teen Employment Program

The Lower East Side Prevention Coalition is seeking private sector employers to provide summer employment opportunities between July 5th and August 18th for young people ages 16 through 21. The estimated financial commitment is approximately $1500 per job. This project, Summer Teen Employment Program (STEP), strives to place at least 50 students in jobs.

The Lower East Side Prevention Coalition is a consortium of agencies including Immigrant Social Services, the Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, Hamilton-Madison House, the Oce of the Manhattan District Attorney, NYS Oce of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services, The Department of Education and the Chinatown Manpower Project. The mission of the Lower East Side Prevention Coalition is to promote positive youth development and to address factors that expose youth to alcohol, drug use, gang influence, violence and gambling.

- Help employ students for 6 weeks from July 5th to August 18th (Minimum wage for at least 20 hours/week).

- Job candidates are pre-screened to match job requirements.

- Job candidates come recommended by teachers or community leaders.

- Employers make the final decision on who they hire.

CityBench is coming!

(Help suggest a location)

The CityBench program is an initiative to increase the amount of public seating on New York City's streets. DOT is installing attractive and durable benches around the city, particularly at bus stops, retail corridors, and in areas with high concentrations of senior citizens.

These benches will make streets more comfortable for transit riders, pedestrians and visitors, especially for those who are older and disabled. Anyone can request a bench. DOT is seeking input from all New Yorkers to recommend locations for benches.
